Howard Gillman was appointed dean and holder of the Anna H. Bing Dean’s Chair in the USC Dana and David Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences in June 2007.

Gillman joined the college faculty in 1990 and is a professor of political science, history and law. Over the years, he has served USC in a variety of leadership capacities, including chair of political science and associate vice provost for research advancement. He is also a distinguished faculty fellow at the USC Center for Excellence in Teaching and has received many honors for his work with students, including the highest honor the university faculty bestows on its members for outstanding teaching, the USC Associates Award for Excellence in Teaching.

As a scholar, Gillman is considered one of the country’s leading experts on the Supreme Court and the American Constitution. He has served in leadership positions in various scholarly organizations and has earned numerous awards for his research.

As dean, Gillman has worked to promote signature areas of research excellence, improve the quality and reputation of Ph.D. programs, enhance undergraduate opportunities for scholarly research and global experiences, and create conditions for increased innovation across the college’s 30 academic departments.

He is a native of Los Angeles and holds B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in political science from UCLA.
