Associate Senior Vice President for Advancement

Julie Lucas is associate senior vice president for advancement for University Advancement. In this role, she assists the fundraising efforts of the schools of architecture, business, communications and journalism, dramatic arts, education, fine arts, law, music, public policy and social work, as well as the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, the USC Libraries, KUSC, and the university’s international fundraising program.

A development professional with nearly 20 years of experience in higher education and external relations, Lucas was named to Crain’s New York Business “40 Under Forty” in 2010. She has been quoted in The New York Times and Forbes and is a frequent speaker at industry conferences nationwide. Lucas comes to USC from New York University (NYU), where she served as associate dean of development and alumni relations for the Stern School of Business. She led the global strategy for Stern’s 100,000-plus alumni community and all development activities, achieving a 133-percent increase in leadership gifts; a 381-percent increase in planned gifts; a 15-percent increase in overall giving; a 24-percent increase in first-time donors; a 60-percent increase in faculty and staff giving; and 100-percent participation from both leadership boards, a first in the history of the school.

Prior to NYU, Lucas served in a series of progressively senior development roles at Fordham University School of Law, Hofstra University and the Episcopal Church Foundation, as well as NYU and its School of Law. During her tenure at Fordham, she oversaw all aspects of a $100 million campaign, increased donations to the School of Law by 500 percent, and raised more money during her five-year tenure than in the entire 100-plus-year history of the law school. Lucas holds a bachelor’s in political science and Spanish from Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College), a master’s in educational administration from Hofstra University and an advanced certification from NYU’s center for philanthropy and fundraising.

Associate Vice President for Health Sciences Development and Senior Associate Dean, Keck School of Medicine

Melany Duval leads USC’s efforts to raise $1.5 billion to fuel the success and impact of the university’s medical enterprise. The $1.5 billion fundraising target for Keck Medicine of USC is the largest component of the $6 billion Campaign for the University of Southern California. She oversees the comprehensive fundraising and alumni and donor relations programs for Keck Medicine of USC, which is composed of the Keck School of Medicine of USC (including the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center and related USC Health Sciences’ research centers and affiliates) and the Keck Medical Center of USC, comprising Keck Hospital of USC, USC Norris Cancer Hospital and the USC Care Medical Group of physician practices.

Prior to her appointment on August 27, 2012, Duval spent eight years with Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA), most recently as vice president of development. While there, she played a leadership role in helping CHLA complete a $1 billion fundraising campaign, the largest fundraising achievement ever by a freestanding hospital in North America. Her previous professional experience includes a position as assistant vice president for development and campaign director at Loyola Marymount University, where she was responsible for all campus development initiatives and campaign planning. Duval earned her bachelor of arts in political science and business administration from Loyola Marymount University.
