Vice President of Professionalism and Ethics
Michael Blanton is the vice president of professionalism and ethics. Under Mr. Blanton’s leadership, the Office of Professionalism and Ethics serves as the university’s hub for complaint intake and investigations at all levels and across both campuses. Mr. Blanton has oversight of the following investigatory offices: The Title IX Office, Office of Equity and Diversity (OED), Office of Athletic Compliance, and the newly-created Office of Conduct, Accountability, and Professionalism (CAP). In addition, the Office of Compliance, Office of Internal Audit, and Office of Student Judicial Affairs and Community Standards (SJACS) have a reporting line to Mr. Blanton, specifically for the direction, oversight, and monitoring of allegations that may require review or investigation.
In January of 2017, Mr. Blanton was appointed vice president for athletic compliance, and in this capacity, ensured the university’s compliance with NCAA, Pac-12, and university rules and regulations. Mr. Blanton has extensive experience in managing all levels of investigations, both as an outside attorney for USC and in his previous role as vice president for athletic compliance.
Prior to joining USC, Mr. Blanton practiced law for nearly 20 years at several law firms in Los Angeles, specializing in civil and business litigation. He was a partner at Hill, Farrer & Burrill, LLP, and prior to that, was named partner of his own law firm, having begun his career at Lord, Bissell & Brook. He earned his bachelor’s degree from California State University, Long Beach, and his J.D. from the USC Gould School of Law.
